Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks
Funko 3 3/4-inch figures

Often imitated, never equaled:  Twin Peaks was ahead of its time during its short run in the early 90's.  A mystery solved too early, a cancellation ending with a cliffhanger, and a movie that asked more questions than it answered, fans have been waiting 25 years for some real resolution.  The limited-run Showtime series has us all wondering "are we going to get an ending, or what?"  So far it has been a mixed bag among Peaks fans, David Lynch fans, and Peaks/Lynch fans.  No matter the result, at least there has been a new wave of Twin Peaks merchandise to ride!

This boxed set of figures is by Funko Toys.  I despise Funko Pops for way they treat certain properties with exclusives.  Their Indiana Jones Pops are damn near impossible to get, with second market prices in the hundreds! (Like Beanie Babies, I hope the bottom drops out on that market soon and for good!)  I also had a bad round with their customer service over a blind-bag Pac Man with a broken hand.  Luckily, no problems to report on this set of 3 3/4 inch figures.  Initially, I thought these were priced a bit high for what you get.  I was able to snag one at $18.  I wouldn't pay more than $20 unless you're a die-hard fan.  The likenesses are pretty good for figures of this size.  The same could be said of the articulation:  swivel head, multi-articulated shoulders, hinged elbows, swivel wrists, waist swivel, t-crotch legs, hinged knees (with exception: Log Lady's lack of knee articulation and Laura being more of a static accessory.)

"Do ya wanna play with fire, little boy?"
Bob has that evil grimace and "gonna getcha" hands like he's creeping up over Sarah Palmer's couch.   He comes with no accessories, but he doesn't really need any.  Maybe a little mirror with a lenticular hologram of Bob in it would have been nice?

"One day, my log will have something to say about this."

The Log Lady looks as stern and uptight as ever.  Like most action figures and eyewear, the glasses are a bit big looking.  Of course, she comes with the log as an accessory.

"Hey, where's the cherry pie?"
Agent Dale Cooper has the same articulation as Bob, but leg movement is hindered by his trench coat.  He comes with a hand-held tape recorder to take memos for Diane and a damn fine cup of coffee.  It would have been nice if he came with a gun, but that apparently wouldn't help him out of the Black Lodge anyway.  I think this may be the third action figure outing for Kyle McLachlan...along with "Dune" and "The Flintstones."

Finally, we come to Laura Palmer who, as I mentioned before, is more of an accessory or inaction figure.  There is some swivel articulation on the head, but it is restricted by the plastic tarp and her hair.  You can definitely see a fully sculpted figure in there when you hold it up to the light.  I saw another toy reviewer crack it open to take a look.  She is sculpted with some detail, but has no additional articulation.  The "dead" look in the paint detail is good, and the blood spatters on the tarp are a nice touch.  I wish she had come with some sort of stand to display her upright.

All in all, this is a nice set.  I wish there were more Twin Peaks characters coming in this fashion, but I doubt it.  If I could just get one more set with Big Ed, Nadine, Norma, and Dr. Jacoby...or Audrey, Donna, James, and alive Laura....or Sheriff Truman, Hawk, Andy, and Lucy...or Leland, Sarah, Maddie, and Mike...or Bobby, Shelly, Leo, and...
