Saurozoic Warriors

Saurozoic Warriors

Boss Fight Studio

Boss Fight Studio was already becoming one of my favorite toy producers with their recent Popeye line, Bucky O'Hare, and Zorro Hacks figures.  And now they've gone an done this...created an original line that should appeal to action figure collectors of the 80s and 90s.  Kids of all ages love dinosaurs, too!

Saurozoic Warriors are anthropomorphic dinos in bright, fantastical colors and proportions akin to Ninja Turtles or Toxic Crusader.  What's not to love?  Boss Fight has even gone the distance to flesh out a backstory for each character, all coming together to for one colossal conflict.

One faction is total ceratopsian.  Triceratops is my personal favorite dinosaur, so I love that the central character/leader here is of the three-horned persuasion.  His battle-scarred eye puts him over the (cera)top!

The Brachiosaur is a close runner up.  The execution on the neck and head alone are great!  So great, that this one needed a double dip.  A Big Bad Toy Store exclusive gives us a skeletal paint job.  The new deco is built into the story, but I don't mind pretending that he's a completely different sauropod solider for army building's sake.

The "tank" of this group is the stout and wide Stegosaurus.  If the sculpt alone didnt ooze "bad attitude, they gave him a leather vest and the biggest gun of the group to solidify his bad-assery.  Its a little strange that the stego is the only humanoid dino here to retain a tail.  I guess its only of the identifying features of the stego, so hard to go without?  Or it just balances him holding the big-ass gun.

The ceratopsian guard is the army builder of the group.  Im glad they have the gas mask to help solidify them as the foot soldiers.  Also gives off the Toxic Crusader vibe I mentioned above.

While billed as a 6-inch line, these scale a bit small in comparison to other lines.  I think they are right at home with Masters of the Universe Origins, not only in scale, but in articulation and the shared techno-barbarian themes.  Maybe in an effort to resurrect the Snake Men, a time portal reach back beyond Preternia and out popped these guys?  Go ahead and connect them with a Battle Bones origin!

These do run a bit high ($30) for figures of this scale, but the fun-factor and rarity of being an original line makes them easy to support.  The waves should also be spaced out with enough time to budget for them.  Another wave is on the way, and I cant wait.  No sign of a Tyrannosaurus Rex yet...would make an awesome deluxe figure, Boss Fight.  Bring 'em on!

Toy Room Update

 Toy Room Update

It's been a rough six months or so, and the blog has suffered.  However, that doesn't mean I've stopped accumulating toys!  From the tiniest of Hot Wheels, to your standard action figure, and even a couple of overindulgent Haslab crowdfunded monsters...the Terrible Toyman returns with a glut of pictures and a few comments to go along with them.

Popeye!  I thought Mezco was the end all, be all, but Boss Fight Studios is giving them a run for the money!  Maybe my fave line at the end of last year and heading into this one!

Wart!  Love me some Super Mario Bros. 2!  Etsy statue that scales well with the 4-in Jakks Pacific line.

More Tick added to the lineup with an almost complete Dick Tracy group (no Blank, of course).  And did a deep dive into Star Trek!  The price was right at $4 a figure carded!  Micro Machines?! Yes!

Robin Hood, Prince John, and Sir Hiss...a childhood favorite comes to life!  Also, any Roger Rabbit is good Roger Rabbit, even if it's overpriced ReAction figures.

Egghead, Mr. Freeze, and Catwoman III join the Villains United!

Since Neca/Playmates loosened up on the exclusivity of the toon Turtles, the collection has almost topped out.  The Turtle Van is on the way!

Dime Novel Legends.  A lil pricey, but understandable for a home-grown operation.  Definitely hooked when certain likenesses started to pop up.  Awesome figures for the older crowd.  Or those of us with a restless heart?  "I was born under a wanderin' star..."

Galactus Haslab.  Ugh, crowdfunding...but how could I have Marvel Legends without him?  More Heralds, too, but no Jack Kirby.

Another Haslab, but comparted to the pack building community options, worth the price.  Since I have several built packs, this one stays an "official" collectible...until Im old and need something lighter weight.

Hasbro Selfie Series.  Aside from suggestion of facial hair and lack of glasses, I think mine turned out pretty good.  $60 may seem steep, but its all painted, and Ghostbusters def has it over other options with the accessories.  I added some video game parts, because I love that 2009 release so much.  Now I stand on the "B" team with "Casper Mustache" Ray and the Rookie.

That should bring us up to speed more or less.  In case there's something I missed, here are pics of the toy room in various states.  Enjoy!

Popeye and Bluto

Popeye and Bluto

Stormy Seas Ahead : Deluxe Box Set

Mezco ONE:12 Collective

Welcome back, Popeye!  It’s been a while since Mezco’s last offering took “toy of the year” right before the stroke of midnight New Year’s Eve, and this set looks to take the competition by storm all the same.  The Popeye figure might look familiar, but he’ll need the change of duds after going toe to toe against his arch-nemesis, Bluto!

Since this is a re-deco, let’s talk Sailor Man first.  Here, Popeye gets a rerelease in more Navy/nautical colors.  He comes with the same accessories as the last (pipes, hats, alt heads, hands, spyglass, compass, peacoat, duffle bag (though in new colors), and of course, spinach cans.  You get the same stand and “flight” rod system (now white instead of navy blue...one for Bluto, too). Nothing has changed as far as sculpt or articulation...you can’t improve on perfection.  Other than the new togs, there are a few new accessories that will make this double dip all worthwhile.  More on that after a look at Bluto.

He’s large. (Laaaaaarge!)  He’s mean. (Do you know what I mean?)  He’s everything you could want out of an exaggerated, yet realistic take on these characters.  The grimace captures the big palooka picture perfect.  Just look at the weathering on those shoes and pants!  He has a fair amount of articulation in the head, arms, and legs...the most important to posing being the wrists for interchangeable hands and accessories.  He has some motion in his waist, but nothing for the chest.  This is not disappointing, as it’s true to the barrel-chested nature of the beast.

Accessory-wise, he comes with a removable hat (magnetic), three sets of hands, a boat hook, a giant wrench, and a 300 lbs weight.  I had no idea that the wrench and weight would be die-cast metal until I took them out of the package.  Not a necessary detail in the least, but very cool.  Really let’s your Bluto figure show off his heft, balance, and strength.

Now, the bonus.  Both Popeye and Bluto come with alternate, battle-damaged heads!  There are some really neat bumps (Boff!), bruises, (Wham!) and even a little bit of blood.(Un’erstan’?)  So, down some spinach for some knock-down, drag-out, Fleischer-esque fisticuffs!

Bonus bonus!  Which I guess adds to the “Stormy Seas” theme...both characters have some extra sea-weathering gear!  Popeye gets a rain slicker and matching hat, and Bluto gets a big leather peacoat.  While I usually get a Bluto-sized grimace when it comes to the struggle of changing out soft goods outfits on action figures, these weren’t so bad.  They don’t look too bad for soft goods either.  Popeye’s rain hat may have been better as a sculpted item, but it’s by no means terrible.

I jumped on the preordered for this set maybe a year ago?  If you didn’t do the same, you may have missed the boat:  sold out in most online retailers.  I’m happy that there are enough fans out there to want figures like these. I imagine more variants will be on the way...heck, Popeye has always been a new head away from his Poopdeck Pappy.  Not sure if they will do an Olive Oyl...not sure if I would want one, thinking about how freakish she could look in a realistic take.  Eh, I’d still buy it.

Take a look back at the previous adventures of Popeye:
